Spondike takes home national culinary title

A first place medal went to Julia Spondike on June 22 in the culinary arts competition at the SkillsUSA National Conference in Louisville, Ky.

A recent graduate of the Lorain County JVS, the achievement comes as Spondike plans to attend the Culinary Institute of America.

“I still can’t stop smiling,” she said. “Achieving first place on the national level and being awarded a full tuition scholarship, which amounts to over $160,000, to the Culinary Institute of America in New York is having my dream become a reality.”

Spondike competed against 43 other culinary arts students from across the United States, working with chef Tim Michitsch, JVS culinary arts instructor.

She praised Michitsch for pouring energy into his students and said she couldn’t have won the gold without his guidance.

“Julia’s hard work and dedication to the craft paid off,” Michitsch said. “This award is much deserved!”

Three JVS culinary students competed in Kentucky. Graduate Thomas Sadowski placed 11th in the restaurant services competition and 2018 senior Olivia Coward placed 19th in the commercial baking competition.

Now Spondike will head to Nashville for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America National Competition.
