Retired teachers award five scholarships

Five college students — three hailing from Amherst — were awarded $1,000 scholarships May 17 by the Lorain County Retired Teachers Association.

The Mary Elizabeth Keller Scholarship goes to students preparing for careers in education. It was given to:

• Christine DeMarco, a graduate of Midview High School, who is majoring in adolescent and young adult education. She plans to teach social studies for grades seven to 12.

• Olivia Henderson, a graduate of Amherst Steele High School, who is majoring in mathematics and adolescent and young adult education. She plans to teach math for grades seven to 12.

• Elizabeth Keller, a graduate of Amherst Steele High School, who is majoring in inclusive early childhood education. She plans to teach special education for prekindergarten to third grade.

• Logan Perkins, a graduate of Elyria High School, who has an associate of arts degree from Lorain County Community College and is attending the Elyria campus of Ashland University. He is majoring in middle childhood education and plans to teach social studies and language arts to grades four to nine.

• Michael Sparks, a graduate of Amherst Steele High School, who will have an associate of arts degree from Lorain County Community College and will attend the Elyria campus of Ashland University. He will major in adolescent and young adult education with plans to teach social studies to grades seven to 12.
