Planet Fitness has announced it will open a new location on the Lorain-Amherst late this spring of this year.
The gym will use the old Sears Hardware building just across the street from the Amherst city limits. That business closed in 2015 as its parent company shuttered dozens of stores.
“I can confirm we have a new club coming to 2000 Cooper foster Park Rd. and it will open in late spring,” Planet Fitness director of marketing Ann Sanborn said. “The club will be open and staffed 24/7.”
The fitness center will be around 23,000 square feet, according to Sanborn, who said the fitness chain will offer specials for new members when the location opens.
She said Planet Fitness is one of the fastest growing full-size health clubs the U.S. and has more than 1,200 locations in 47 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.
The company claims it likes to do things differently than other fitness centers, such as fostering a judgement-free zone — a non-intimidating environment that makes everyone feel comfortable, focusing on general fitness and catering to “everyday people” and offering unlimited fitness training included in all memberships.
Planet Fitness already has nearby locations in Elyria and North Olmsted.
