Three suspects in an army robbery were caught after a police chase Thursday morning through Amherst.
Dae Shawn Simmons, 19, and Jerome Thomas Jr., 18, and a 17-year-old boy, all of Cleveland, were charged with felony counts of receiving stolen property and obstructing official business. The boy was also charged with unruliness.
Amherst police Sgt. Michael Murphy said the trio is believed to have stolen a 2009 Kia Optima from a Cleveland apartment complex earlier in the morning. A firearm was reportedly used, he said.
The stolen car was spotted around 8:30 a.m. while an Amherst officer was running random registration checks on vehicles at Days Inn on Rt. 58.
When approached, the suspects hit the gas and fled to Rt. 2, getting on the eastbound ramp.
The driver lost control and ran off the road near the I-90-Rt. 2 split — and then the suspects bailed, taking off on foot.
Simmons was caught after a short chase, but it took some time to find the other two hiding in a camper in the back yard of a Lake Avenue home in Elyria Township, according to police.
Murphy said the property owner called for help, saying someone had gone in the camper. This time, when police approached Thomas and the teenager they surrendered without incident.
None of the suspects were found to be armed.
The investigation is ongoing, Murphy said.
