Dump truck crashes into Middle Ridge bridge

Driver hospitalized, three others caught in wreckage

Staff Report

A dump truck slammed into an overpass Monday on Rt. 2, then rolled into an Amherst Township ditch, the driver trapped underneath.

Freeman Miller, 69, of Millersburg, was pulled out by rescuers and taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with “incapacitating injuries,” according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He was later taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

The crash came when the red 2005 Kenworth dump truck, traveling west with its dump bed partially raised, hit the Middle Ridge Road bridge at 7:16 a.m.

Several other vehicles were struck by debris but no other injuries were reported, state troopers said.

Impacted drivers included Charles Corso, 77, of Huron; Kelsey Vick, 23, of North Ridgeville; and Ashely Harrish, 29, of Amherst.

Traffic was slowed to one lane for seven hours while Ohio Department of Transportation workers inspected the bridge and made temporary repairs.

No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.
