Five Points, one goal

Amherst police and firefighters stopped traffic Saturday at the city’s Five Points downtown intersection. With buckets in hand, they collected nearly $6,000 for the family of Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper Kenneth Velez, who died Sept. 15 during a routine traffic stop. They also strung a banner from the bandstand at Amherst town hall, which read, “Thank you, trooper Velez.” Flying over the intersection from the ladder of a fire engine was an American flag.
