Dock diving made its way to the Lorain County Fair for the first time this year. The event first popped up in 1997 at the Incredible Dog Challenge competition, and has since been expanded by DockDogs, the company running the fair’s event, which held its first dock diving competition at the ESPN Great Outdoor Games in 2000. Other companies such as Splash Dogs, Ultimate Air Dogs, and Dash N’ Splash have since grown the sport internationally.

Owners use two different techniques to coax their canine friends into the water: “place and send,” in which the owner holds the dog back while a toy is thrown; and “chase,” where the toy is thrown as the dog is running off of the dock.
