Four athletes — Gabe Bullock, Nathan Gezzer, Austin Bentley, and Isaiah Rodriguez — were sent off Friday to represent Amherst in the three-day state Special Olympics competition. All four will take part in the 100-meter run and standing long jump at Jesse Owens Stadium, Ohio State University. The showing is Amherst’s first ever in the Special Olympics summer games, said intervention specialist Gina Welch. A big crowd gathered Friday behind Steele High School, keeping out of sight until the athletes were nearly ready to depart. At the last moment, they march around a corner bearing signs and chanting support for Bullock, Gezzer, Bentley, and Rodriguez.
