Sting shows minors can get alcohol in Amherst

Four Amherst store clerks were charged Friday when police conducted an underage alcohol sales sting.

Officers sent a confidential informant under the age of 21 to try to buy alcohol. He emerged successful from four locations.

The informant went at 5:52 p.m. to the Speedway gas station on Rt. 58 and exited with Bud Light beer. Cage Montague, 22, of Lorain, was charged with underage sales.

The experiment was repeated at 6:50 p.m. at Convenient on Rt. 58, at 7:11 p.m. on Dairymart on Cleveland Avenue, and at 7:20 p.m. at the Amherst Party Shop on South Main Street.

The informant was able to purchase Bud Ice, Bud Light Lime, and Martini and Rossi Extra Dry in turn.

Ashley Patterson, 22, of Elyria; Selena Rodriguez, 21, of Lorain; and Kristin Black, 18, of Amherst, were charged at the respective sales points.

The charges are all first-degree misdemeanors. All four suspects were ordered to appear June 29 in Oberlin Municipal Court.
