Amherst police reports: Many thefts over holiday stretch


• Dec. 24 at 2:35 p.m.: Neighbors noticed an elderly Hamilton Street man’s house door open and his keys in his vehicle. Police found him deceased inside the home, apparently of natural causes.

• Dec. 25 at 4:58 p.m.: A Christmas dispute erupted between a couple over how much time was spent at each family’s home. Police were called to the area of Kresge Drive and Liberty Bell for a report of a man lying on a woman in a ditch. Police found a 23-year-old Elyria woman and contacted her 24-year-old boyfriend by phone. There were no charges, but police filled out an internal department domestic violence form.

• Dec. 25 at 7:28 p.m.: Police were contacted about a woman and her children being barred from leaving a Franklin Avenue residence. By the time officers arrived, the woman was in her vehicle and no longer wanted to speak with police. The situation arose from an argument over the woman’s boyfriend being intoxicated.

• Dec. 26, time undisclosed by police: An iPad, sunglasses, and change were stolen from a vehicle on Lincoln Street.

• Dec. 26 at 11:45 a.m.: A backpack was found lying in the road at Timberview and North Woodhill Drive. Police said it had been stolen from a nearby vehicle.

• Dec. 26 at 11:50 a.m.: A backpack was found at the corner of Blossom and Cherry Valley drives. Police said they believe it was stolen in a series of thefts in the area.

• Dec. 26 at noon: Cash was taken from a vehicle in a driveway on North Woodhill Drive.

• Dec. 27, time undisclosed by police: A vehicle’s tire was found slashed on South Lake Street. A second report indicated another vehicle’s tire was cut just down the street. Both were parked in driveways.

• Dec. 27, time undisclosed by police: Two loaded gun magazines were stolen from an unlocked car on Elyria Avenue.

• Dec. 27 at 2:46 a.m.: Randy Lewis, 54, of Vermilion, was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, marked lanes, no seat belt, weaving, and failure to use a turn signal. He was stopped on Rt. 2.

• Dec. 27 at 3 a.m.: Nickolas Ruiz, 35, of Cleveland, was charged with theft, criminal tools, drug abuse instruments, drug paraphernalia, and no driver’s license. Kristin Bennett, 34, of Cleveland, was charged with theft and criminal tools. They were arrested when police were called to Giant Eagle. Merchandise reported stolen from the store was found in their vehicle, a police report said.

• Dec. 27 at 5:07 a.m.: Police responded to a 911 hang-up call on McIntosh Lane. Both parties were heavily intoxicated and a domestic dispute had occured, police said.

• Dec. 27 at 10:57 a.m.: A substance appearing to be sand was put in the gas tank of a vehicle on Charles Avenue.

• Dec. 27 at 12:11 p.m.: Someone went through vehicles in a Shupe Avenue driveway and caused damage.

• Dec. 27 at 12:49 p.m.: A car’s tire was slashed on Alexander Avenue.

• Dec. 28 at 11:43 a.m.: Sheryl Hubbard, 54, of Amherst, was arrested on a warrant for theft, possession of drug abuse instruments, and obstructing official business. Police encountered her during a theft complaint at Target on North Lake Street where she was allegedly seen putting items in her purse, then placing the items back, according to a police report.

• Dec. 28 at 2:51 p.m.: A 16-year-old Lorain boy was charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

• Dec. 30 at 12:27 a.m.: A home intruder was reported on Lincoln Street. When police arrived, the homeowner was holding the suspect down on the front door sidewalk. The homeowner declined charges against a 46-year-old Amherst woman due to her mental state, a police report said. She was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain for evaluation.

• Dec. 30 at 3:11 p.m.: Leanne Metz, 24, of Elyria, was arrested on a warrant for petty theft. She was also charged with petty theft and possession of criminal tools related to an incident at Target.

• Dec. 31, time undisclosed by police: A suspicious object was discovered lying on the engine block of a vehicle being serviced at Spitzer Chevrolet-Volkswagon on Rt. 58. The item was shaped like a possible explosive device. It was determined to be harmless.

• Jan. 1 at 2:50 p.m.: A car window was reported shattered at Spitzer Volkswagon on Rt. 58.

• Jan. 1 at 10:59 p.m.: Justin Palmer, 19, of Lorain, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

• Jan. 2 at 12:58 a.m.: Three doses of naloxone were given to an unresponsive man on Braeburn Court. The man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.

• Jan. 2 at 11:10 p.m.: Michelle Gonzales, 44, of Lorain, was charged with disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct by intoxication following an incident on Church Street.

• Jan. 3 at 4:15 a.m.: Brandon Alverez, 36, of Lorain, was arrested on a warrant for contempt of court related to a dangerous drugs charge.

• Jan. 3 at 12:48 p.m.: Items were reported stolen from a car parked on Pearl Street.
