Amherst’s Fifth Annual Veteran’s Day ceremony will be held at 11 am. on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the municipal parking lot on Park Avenue.
The event will give special recognition to Korean War veterans with the unveiling of a new mural by artist Mike Sekletar that is dedicated to what is often called the “Forgotten War.”
Fox 8 News anchor Lou Maglio will be the master of ceremonies for the fifth consecutive year. He will be joined by guest speaker Sheila Miyoshi Jager, who is a professor of East Asian studies at Oberlin College, and Amherst Steele High School’s Lexi Davila, who performed on NBC’s “The Voice” earlier this year.
A Titan Aircraft is expected to fly over the ceremony.
A luncheon will be held afterward at the Amherst VFW. It will be free to veterans and $5 for the public.
Activities will also be held throughout the day in Oberlin and Wellington, where the News-Times’ sister newspapers provide coverage.
An observance of veterans will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the New Russia Township Lodge.
The Lorain High School JROTC and Oberlin High School orchestra will post and retire the colors and play patriotic melodies. A guest speaker for the event has not yet been announced.
Light refreshments will be available after the ceremony.
The Wellington VFW will host a lunch for veterans from noon to 2 p.m. and Wellington American Legion Post 8 will hold a dinner at 6 p.m.
A Veterans Day program will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in front of Wellington town hall on South Main Street.
The event will include a ceremony and a rifle salute.
