Grapplers take quad with pin
The Steele wrestlers traveled to Cuyahoga Heights on Saturday evening, Jan. 23, to wrestle with three other teams. The teams participating were Kenston, Cuyahoga Heights, Garfield Heights, and Amherst.
Amherst wrestled against Kenston in the first round, and won with the final team score of 38-20. Team points were scored by Mark Matos (112 lb.) 4-2, Alex Funderburg (119 lb.) 6-0, Devan Price (145 lb.) 12-4, Matt Zvosec (140 lb.) 15-0, Kyle Jones (152 lb.) 15-4, Alex O'Dor (160 lb.) 4-2, Alex Basinski (171 lb.) 14-0, Jake Cumberledge (189 lb.) Pin, Andrew Brumenschenkel ( 215 lb.) 5 -2, Fred Breeding ( hvy wt.) 5-3.
Comets wrestlers competed against host team Cuyahoga Heights in their second and final team round. C.J.Basinski's (130 lb.) first period pin in the final match of the night gave the Comets the points they needed to win the meet for the evening. The final team score was 31-29. Individual victories were from Matos (9-2), Funderburg (9-4), Costas Kocan, 125 lb, (4-2),Zvosec (7-5), A. Basinski (6-0), Cumberledge (11-0), Brumenschenkel (second round pin).
The Comets wrestle at home on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m., at Steele High School. They host Brecksville-Broadview Heights in this, their final home match of the season.
