In a game marked by ebbs and flows, the Amherst Comets forgot to flow when North Olmsted ebbed, and ended up losing to the Eagles Friday night, 50-40.
After engaging in a seesaw battle through the first half, North Olmsted exploded for 14 points in the third quarter. They held the Comets to seven points to take a 33-25 lead going into the final frame.
"We did OK tonight, but we need to do great to give ourselves a chance to win," coach John Srnis said. "We're asking the kids a lot. We have to play great on offense and great on defense. We can't take any possessions off."
The Comets took off plenty of possessions through the last three minutes of the third period. Trailing 19-18 going into the second half, the Comets continued the seesaw battle of the first half, taking 24-23 lead on a lay-up by Connor Weir, with an assist from Shakeem Jones.
That was the last lead the Comets would have as the Eagles went on a 10-1 run over the final three minutes. Amherst would close the gap to five points to open the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game.
The Eagles went on a nine-point run to take their largest lead of the game, 14 points. Adam Koehler put the exclamation point on the run with a steal and lay-up.
The loss dropped the Comets to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the Southwestern Conference. The game against Westlake last night was not complete before press time.
The Comets take on Berea at home on Friday.
