Police Blotters for Jan. 13
Dec. 31, 12:32 a.m.: Officer Jacob Perez was patrolling Elyria Avenue when he saw a black Ford Focus, driven by Christopher Schoen, traveling eastbound at what appeared to be a speed greater than the posted 35 mph speed limit.
At this point, Perez stopped and activated his stationary radar. The officer was able to obtain a tracking history with the aid of an audible pitch signal for the radar. It showed Schoen was traveling 50 mph in a 35 mph zone.
As Perez caught up with Schoen, he reported the vehicle was close to the curb. As the driver approached Middle Ridge Road, the officer observed Schoen slow down once he came to the intersection, but fail to come to a complete stop as he proceeded to travel westbound.
Perez activated his overhead lights, but Schoen kept driving.
In a further attempt to pull him over, the officer the utilized the cruiser's spotlight to illuminate the interior of the vehicle. After traveling two-tenths of a mile from Elyria Avenue, Schoen pulled over just west of Woodhaven Drive.
While speaking with him, Perez said he was able to detect a very strong odor of an intoxicating beverage coming from on or about his person. Schoen's eyes were also glassy in appearance and his speech was slurred when speaking, according to a police report.
He was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, speeding, a stop sign violation, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jan. 1, 12:06 a.m.: Officer Jacob Perez was on patrol on South Lake Street when he saw three male and two female juveniles walking southbound near Alexander Avenue.
Due to the fact it was past curfew, the officer stopped the teens. Upon further investigation, two of the juveniles were found to be under the influence of alcohol and one was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.
A 15-year-old male was charged with underage consumption and violating curfew, while another 15-year-old was charged with underage consumption, violating curfew, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A 17-year-old male was also arrested and charged with violating curfew.
Jan. 2, 1:08 a.m.: Officer Devin Small initiated a traffic stop on a black Honda Civic, driven by Brandon Young, for operating a vehicle on the roadway without the right front headlight illuminated.
While speaking with Young, Small observed a bottle of Bud Light with the cap still intact next to his passenger, identified as Adam Young.
After an investigation was completed, Young was arrested and charged with underage consumption.
Jan. 2, 11:48 p.m.: Officer Michael Taliano initiated a traffic stop on the eastbound entrance ramp to Rt. 2 from Leavitt Road.
During the stop, the driver, Hannah Swartz, and her passenger, Jose Montanez, were found to be in possession of open containers of alcohol. Montanez was also violating a temporary protection order and lied to Taliano about his identity.
Swartz was arrested and charged with open container and improper turning at intersections.
Montanez was charged with a temporary protection order violation, obstructing official business and open container.
Jan. 3, 1:59 a.m.: Sergeant Mark Cawthon was attending to an intoxicated female in city parking lot #3 when he was approached by an unidentified male stating there was a fight going on inside RC's Brewhouse, 223 Church St. Cawthon radioed officer Devin Small who was arriving on scene to assist him, to divert to the bar.
During the course of their investigation, it was learned a male had allegedly punched another male. As a result, James W. Fenderson was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
After he was booked in the city jail, Fenderson was transported to the Lorain County Jail where he was being held on a $1,150 bond pending an appearance inside Oberlin Municipal Court.
