Police Blotters for Dec. 30
Dec. 17, 9:52 a.m.: Officer Michael Taliano responded to the Lorain City Jail to take custody of Byanka Tavarez.
She had an active bench warrant through the Amherst Police Department for contempt on the original charge of disorderly conduct.
Tavarez was given a new court date before being transported to the Lorain County Jail.
Dec. 18, 12:09 a.m.: Officer Jacob Perez was on patrol on Prospect Drive approaching Park Avenue when he saw a black Pontiac Grand Am, driven by 19-year-old Ashley Swiger, make an illegal turn on a one-way street from city parking lot #3.
As the officer was traveling behind the vehicle, he performed a registration check on the vehicle. Dispatch advised Perez the owner of the vehicle, identified as 19-year-old Michalena McCann, had a suspended driver's license.
Due to the one-way street violation, Perez initiated a traffic stop on Park Avenue, just west of Spring Street.
Swiger told the officer she was unaware that section of roadway was a one-way street. McCann, who was sitting in the passenger seat, confirmed her identity by handing over ID to Perez.
While the officer was speaking to Swiger, he reported he detected a strong odor of an intoxicating beverage coming from her. Perez also reported her eyes were glassy in appearance and she slurred her words when speaking. McCann also exhibited signs of being intoxicated as well, according to a police report.
Swiger was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, having a blood alcohol level more than the .08 percent state legal limit, driving under suspension, underage consumption, misrepresentation to obtain alcohol, possession of drug paraphernalia and a one-way street violation.
McCann was also arrested and charged with underage consumption, misrepresentation to obtain alcohol and wrongful entrustment.
Dec. 18, 2:02 a.m.: Officer Michael Taliano responded to the Oberlin City Jail to take custody of Carlos Frias who had an active bench warrant through the Amherst Police Department for contempt on an original charge of driving under suspension.
Frias was transported to the Lorain County Jail and given a new court date.
Dec. 18, 7:16 a.m.: Officer Michael Rosebeck was dispatched to a residence on Peregrine Place in reference to a theft from a vehicle. A woman told the officer as she was walking to her orange Pontiac Sunfire, owned by her father when she saw the vehicle had been rummaged. About $10 in loose change, a National City Bank ATM card, CDs, and a blue Jansport book bag were stolen from the vehicle.
However, the burglar put her school textbooks in a Target bag and placed it near the front door before running off with the backpack.
She told police she thought she had locked the vehicle the night before. Rosebeck observed no signs of forced entry. The incident is under investigation.
Dec. 19, 1:01 a.m.: Officer Michael Taliano initiated a traffic stop on Park Avenue due to a miscellaneous vehicle violation.
A check through LEADS yielded the driver, Erik Anderson, had an active warrant through the Lorain County Sheriff's Department for contempt on burglary.
Anderson was taken in to custody without incident and transported to the Lorain County Jail.
Dec. 19, 1:30 a.m.: Officer Michael Taliano pulled over a driver on Park Avenue after observing a traffic violation.
The driver, identified as Lamar Penny, was found to be in possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia and alcohol.
He was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, open container and for improper display of plates.
Dec. 22, 5:31 a.m.: Officer Kyle Gelenius was on patrol when he observed a group of males, who all appeared to be juveniles, walking eastbound down the middle of East Street.
As the officer turned on to East Street from Franklin Avenue, the males took off running. After checking the area, Gelenius found them on Maple Avenue.
The investigation revealed two 16-year-old males who were violating curfew had consumed alcoholic beverages. They were accompanied by an adult, identified as Derek Harris.
He was arrested and charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, obstructing official business, disorderly conduct while intoxicated, disorderly conduct persisting, and walking along highways intoxicated. Harris was transported to the Lorain County Jail to await an appearance at Oberlin Municipal Court.
The two juveniles were also arrested and charged with one count each of violating curfew and underage consumption. They were released to the custody of their parents.
