Bulletin Board for Feb. 3

St. Joseph open house today

St. Joseph School is holding its annual open house on Wednesday Feb. 3, from 6-8 p.m. Visitors can tour the school and see what St. Joseph School has to offer children. There will also be an art show of work by St. Joseph students. Open enrollment for preschool through eighth grade begins that evening at 6 p.m. The school website is www.sjsamherst.org.

Workshop offers hope

"Hope," a workshop for separated and divorced persons, is a five-part workshop that helps participants identify and work through the pain and grief over the loss of a relationship through separation or divorce. The workshop will be offered on Monday Feb. 8, 15 and 22 and March 1, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the St. Joseph School library, 200 St. Joseph Drive. For registration, or more information, call Maria Maldonado at the parish office at 988-2848.

Spring sign-ups set

The Amherst Athletic Association will hold spring sign-ups for BlastBall, T-Ball, baseball, and softball on Sunday, Feb. 14, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Nordson Depot, 671 Franklin Ave.

Fees are: Blastball, $45; T-Ball, $55 for children ages 7-8; $65 for children ages 9-10; and $75 for children ages 11-14. Children ages 15 and up is $85.

Players must be three years old by July 31, 2010. First-time players should bring a copy of their birth certificate that will not be returned. After Feb. 14 a late fee of $10 will be added to registrations only if openings exist. Church accepting students

St. Paul Lutheran Preschool is now enrolling for the 2010-11 school year. They have morning and afternoon programs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for four- and five-year-old children; and Tuesday and Thursday morning classes for three- and four-year-old children. H1N1 vaccine is here

An H1N1 flu vaccine clinic, open to all residents, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at Amherst Steele High School. The clinic will start at 3 p.m. and conclude at 7 p.m. If the school district closes for inclement weather, the clinic will be rescheduled. Amherst Steele High School is located at 450 Washington St.

No pre-registration is required for the clinic and there is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine. Check loraincountyhealth.com or the flu hotline (440) 329-7926 regularly for updated information.

Boosters cooking steak

The Amherst Steele Home Run Boosters will host their annual steak fry on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 6-11:30 p.m. at the Amherst Eagles Hall, 1161 Milan Ave. Tickets are $30 per person, which includes the reverse raffle. All proceeds from this event benefit the Amherst Steele baseball program.

The Amherst Athletic Boosters have announced a new Sunday Bingo schedule beginning Sunday, Feb. 7, when play moves to the first and third Sundays of the month. To celebrate this new schedule the Boosters will be giving away prizes that day including a 42" HD TV, an iPod Nano and two $50 Giant Eagle gift certificates. Each time participants play between Jan. 6 and Feb. 7 their door stub is entered into the drawing. On Sundays doors open at 4 p.m. and games start at 6 p.m. Games continue to take place each Wednesday beginning at 6:30 p.m. Bingo takes place at Nord Middle School, 501 Lincoln St. All proceeds benefit sports programs of the Amherst schools. Lenten fish fries scheduled

St. Joseph School will present Lenten Fish Fries on Feb. 19 and 26, at St. Joseph Parish social hall. Dinners, served from 5 to 7:30 p.m., feature a choice of perch, shrimp or combo, and include cole slaw, french fries, bread, dessert and non-alcoholic beverages for $15 per person. Children's meal, available for $5, includes cheese pizza, cookie and drink. Tickets are available in the school and parish offices. Carryout will be available.

Half the proceeds will benefit the St. Joseph School 7th and 8th grade student trip and half will benefit the SJS Parent Club.

Boosters present Night at the Races Feb. 27

The Amherst Band Boosters will be hosting their seventh annual Night at the Races fund raiser on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Amherst Eagles on Milan Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m., with post time at 7 p.m. Admission is $12 and includes dinner and dessert, plus pop and/or beer. A cash bar will be available as well.

Attendees can also become horse owners for $15. Corporate sponsors are invited to take out an ad in the program or sponsor a race with naming rights.

Quarterback club meets Tuesdays

The Amherst Comets Quarterback Club, which supports the Amherst Comets Football Program in grades 7-12, meets every Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The meeting takes place in the High School's Football fieldhouse.

Every parent, grandparent or guardian of an Amherst Comets Football student-athlete in grades 7-12 is invited to attend.

Come and join the fun, as we support the Amherst Comets Football Program, and its student athletes.

Nord PTO meeting Feb. 11

The Nord Middle School PTO Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at 9:15 a.m. in the cafeteria. All are invited to attend.

Once upon a Saturday

The Amherst Public Library's "Once Upon a Saturday" will take place on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Have fun as we share stories and fun activities for older kids. Attendees will hear a true story about friendship and a famous tortoise. This program is aimed at kids in grades K - 3 but anyone is welcome to attend.

Make Valentines at library

Valentines Day is almost here. Kids are welcome to stop by the Amherst Public Library on Saturday, February 13, and make a unique, one-of-a-kind Valentine's Day card between noon to 2 p.m. Craft materials will be out for those interested in making a Valentine for someone special. This Youth Services program is free and no registration is required.

Friends program Feb. 17

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 7:00 p.m., the Friends of the Amherst Public Library will sponsor a program by Grant Thompson of the Lorain County Metro Parks System. The topic will be Eagles Nests in Our Area, and will take place at the Nordson Depot. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Library friends meeting Feb. 24

The Friends of the Amherst Public Library annual meeting and luncheon will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at noon at the Nordson Depot. Any friends planning to attend should RSVP to Bernie at 988-2320 by Sunday, Feb. 21.

Teen Game Day Feb. 11

Students in fifth grade and up are invited to Teen Game Day at the Amherst Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 11, from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Guitar Hero and other games will be available as well as some "sweet" chocolate fun.
