Comet wrestlers finish fourth in Division I Sectionals Saturday

The Amherst Steele Comets wrestlers competed on Friday and Saturday in Division I Sectionals at Southview High School, and will now send several wrestlers to District competition.

Comets wrestlers demonstrated the skills they have acquired through their gruelling practices and extreme self-discipline. They all put everything they had into their individual matches and showed the crowd and their opponents what real wrestling is. The sectionals included some of the top ranked wrestlers in the state of Ohio. Several of Amherst's wrestlers are now among those ranks, and will move onto the District Tournament.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class from the Division I Sectionals advance to the District Tournament on Feb. 26 and 27 in Ashland.

The outcome of the District Tournament determines who competes in the State Wrestling Tournament held the following weekend at Ohio State University.

Comets wrestlers who will be competing next week in Ashland include second place finisher Alex Basinski (171 lb. senior), third place finishers Matt Zvosec (140 lb. junior) and Devan Price ( 145 lb. sophomore), and fourth place finishers Andrew Brumenschenkel (215 lb. senior) and Alex Funderburg (119 lb. freshman).

The Comets finished fourth of 12 area Division I teams with a total of 120 team points.
