Comets lose final outing to Midpark
A week of make-up games could not get the Amherst Comets a win to end the regular season.
On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the Midpark Meteors showed up to make up a snowed out game from Jan. 8. Whether or not the Comets showed up is debatable, as they lost, 89-39.
The Comets trailed by three points at the end of the first period, and by nine points, 38-29, at halftime. But the Meteors outscored Amherst 51-10 in the second half to cruise to their 18th win of the season.
Connor Weir led the Comets with 14 points, by 6-foot-9-inch center Brian Theriot doubled that for 28 points to lead the Meteors. Alex Kneisel had three 3-point goals among his 11 points, joining Weir as the only Comet in double figures.
On Friday, school was canceled due to another snow storm, so the season finale was moved to Saturday. The extra day of rest failed to produce a win for the Comets as they lost to Westlake, 49-40.
The Comets started out slow, ending the first period on the short end of an 18-9 score. They regathered in the second period to trail by two at the half, 24-22.
But Amherst dug itself back into a hole with a four-point third period, while the Demons scored 15. The Comets rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Westlake 14-10, but the 13-point deficit to start the quarter was too much to overcome.
Kneisel led all scorers with 16 points.
The Comets finished the regular season with a record of 5-15 overall and 1-13 in the Southwest Conference. They began their tournament run last night against second-seeded Strongsville, hoping to get their first win since Dec. 29.
The game was not complete before press time.
